| I can’t speak for all authors, but I can tell you from the bottom of my heart that I get the same thrill every time I introduce a new book. So without further ado … Radical Sisters: Shirley Temple Black, Rose Kushner, Evelyn Lauder, and the Dawn of the Breast Cancer Movement will arrive four months from today on September 16, 2025! Spanning the 1970s through the 1990s, Radical Sisters is the story of three, amazingly courageous women who changed the breast cancer landscape for all who came after them.Shirley Temple Black, the famous child star who ultimately became the first woman ambassador to two different countries, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1972. She started the public conversation about the disease, boldly becoming the first celebrity (EVER!) to speak publicly about her breasts and her cancer. Wife, mother and budding journalist, Rose Kushner, reframed breast cancer protocols after her 1974 diagnosis. She worked tirelessly until the medical establishment did away with the mutilating and debilitating radical mastectomies, and to give patients a voice in their own treatment. In addition her emboldened Congressional testimony paved the way for mandates ensuring that insurance cover mammograms and breast reconstruction. Evelyn Lauder, executive in her mother-in-law’s cosmetic giant, was diagnosed in 1988. Using her clout, she led fundraising for a state-of-the-art breast center in New York City, and did the same for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Her quest for more awareness about the disease led her to the creation of the pink ribbon, now the ubiquitous symbol of breast cancer. This year, more than 300,000 women will be diagnosed with the disease. They, and those who love them, owe a debt of gratitude to these “radical sisters.” |
